Here’s my roundup of things you should watch, read, and pay attention to this week:
Watching
If you watch anything this week, take some time to listen to Professor Jennie Batchelor’s wonderful inaugural lecture ‘A window on the world: the phenomenon of the Lady’s Magazine (1770-1832)‘.
Reading
If you read one thing this week, make it Dr Madeleine Pelling’s great piece for the Georgian Papers Project blog, ‘Cutting, Slicing, Pasting: Royal Female Friendship and Domestic ‘, a fascinating look at paper cutting and its affective potentialities.
Professor Olivette Otele’s new book, African Europeans: An Untold History looks like a much-needed intervention.
I’m excited to catch up with some of the books shortlisted for the Wolfson History Prize, announced today.
This blog for BAVS by Dr Melissa Gustin is typically playful, witty and compelling.
Conferencing
I’m desperately sad to be missing this conference at the University of Warwick, on Women and Property in the long Eighteenth Century. It’s so relevant for my current book chapter on Anne Damer’s inheritance of Strawberry Hill.
This conference on Collectors, Curators and Cataloguers: Hidden Women in Archaeology in the 19th and 20th Centuries is slightly outside of my field, but I still so want to go…
Misc.
Finally, I really enjoyed this post on proofreading tactics – something I find myself doing a lot at the moment as I’m reading and re-reading various publications!
