Research Projects.

Broadly my research examines visual and material culture in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Britain, North America, and across the British Empire.

 

I am currently working on three major projects. The first, Domestic Space in Britain, 1760-1840: Materiality, Sociability and Emotion, explores the social and emotional life of the visual and material cultures of the late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century home. The second, Collage before Modernism, aims to rewrite the history of collage by examining its manifestations before the advent of modernism. Finally, the third project, Fatness and its Images, unpicks the relationship between fatness, visual and material culture from the eighteenth century to the present day.
