I’m completely thrilled to have been awarded a Terra Foundation for American Art Research Travel Grant for the 2019-20 academic year for my project ‘Collage before Modernism’. The grant will enable me to undertake research on the east coast of the United States, at institutions including the American Antiquarian Society, in Worcester, Massachusetts, New York Public Library, the Morgan Library and Museum, and the American Folk Art Museum, the Maryland Historical Society, and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. The Grant will facilitate research for several chapters of the project’s monograph by allowing me to view a number of important collections of American collage (including examples of scrapbooks and collaged albums, Valentines’ cards, album quilts, traditional paper collage, furniture, and other forms of assemblage). I’ll let you know how my plans for this trip develop over the coming year!
